26/02/2009 – 12h38 Índios "gays" são vítimas de preconceito em Barra do Bugres Raoni Ricci Redação 24HorasNews        No início do século XX, na região de Barra do Bugres (160 KM de Cuiabá), os índios Umutinas, um subgrupo Bororo, eram conhecidos como “barbados”, pois usavam barbas, na maioria das vezes postiças. Feitas com pelos de animais e cabelos das índias da tribo, as barbas fortaleciam a imagem do “macho”, da força indígena. Mas os tempos mudaram. Sem nenhum compromisso com os rituais dos seus ancestrais, os novos representantes Umutinas não fazem mais questão de usar as “barbas”, não querem mais passar Jenipapo na garganta para engrossar a voz e não se preocupam mais com a imagem do “homem”. Hoje, na “Barra”, como é carinhosamente chamada a cidade, a coisa mais comum é ver um índio homossexual.            Isso mesmo. Em Barra do Bugres, os índios da antiga tribo “Barbados” estão se redescobrindo e assumindo uma opção sexual não muito normal entre os povos indígenas. Neste carnaval, com roupas justas, cabelos e unhas pintadas, bolsas a tira colo e sem medo de serem apontados, os índios gays saíram de suas aldeias e desfilaram nas ruas da cidade.            Alguns moradores parecem ter se acostumados com a situação, mas os mais antigos deixam a mostra o preconceito. “Já é uma vergonha homens que não honram as calças, agora temos até índios gays”, esbravejou um conhecido bugrensse. “Eu já estou acostumada, tem muito índio gay aqui em Barra do Bugres e eles são divertidos, não vejo problemas em conviver com isso”, afirma outra moradora da cidade, que com bom humor, ainda completa: “Tem muita mulher preocupada em perder o marido aqui”, disse entre risadas.            O preconceito dentro das aldeias é o que mais chama a atenção e preocupa. O Umutina M.C.Y, de 17 anos, conta que já foi agredido várias vezes por ser gay, até por irmãos. “Não posso andar sozinho na tribo, já me batem, gritam, xingam. Meu irmão até jogou pedra em mim”, revelou o jovem Umutina, que desde os 13 anos comunicou a família sobre sua opção. Para alguns especialistas, o preconceito com os índios gays pode gerar mais problemas sociais, como o alcoolismo, que já atinge grande parte das tribos em Mato Grosso.            A comunidade indígena gay da cidade do interior de Mato Grosso pode ser a primeira no estado, já que a Fundação Nacional do Índio não apresenta nenhum registro de homossexualismo entre os índios que vivem mato-grossenses. Mas segundo o antropólogo Darcy Ribeiro, há registros de homossexualidade entre índios desde ao menos o século 19. Em Mato Grosso, ele estudou os Cadiuéus, que chamavam o homossexual de kudina, que significa: “que decidiu ser mulher”. No estado do Amazonas, já foram detectados inúmeros casos de índios que assumiram a homossexualidade e hoje também sofrem preconceito dentro e fora das aldeias.

Zimbabwe

Dear Reader, Zimbabwe was once one of the most promising countries in Africa with a thriving agricultural industry, one of the region’s highest literacy rates and a robust healthcare system. Today, the people of Zimbabwe are facing desperation. Twenty eight years of increasingly dictatorial rule by President Robert Mugabe have led to hyperinflation, food shortages and a breakdown of basic public services. Last year, the world watched Zimbabwe suffer through a botched and violent election. But recently, after months of bitter negotiations with President Robert Mugabe, opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was sworn in as the new Prime Minister, forming a “unity government” that will attempt to move the country forward. It won’t be easy. Last year’s disastrous election and President’s Mugabe’s continued presence casts doubt about how much change is possible. The good news is that Zimbabwe does not have to do this work alone. The African Union (AU) will serve as guarantor for this new government and it is critical that they take immediate action to ensure Zimbabwe’s unity government takes steps in the right direction. Ensure an enabling environment for the new unity government. The consequences of years of poor governance in Zimbabwe are poverty and disease on a tragic scale. Public hospitals have been without running water for months and more than 3,000 people have died in Africa’s worst cholera epidemic in 19 years. Schools have been shut down because teachers can’t be paid. The agricultural sector has collapsed, half the population requires emergency food aid and humanitarian aid groups are struggling to keep up. We’re not the only ones calling for action. In South Africa, activist and co-founder of the Global Campaign Against Poverty, Dr. Kumi Nadoo had this to say: "Unity within governmental structures alone does not address the humanitarian and human rights issues that the people of Zimbabwe face on a daily basis. Therefore, the AU must – first and foremost – demand that the Zimbabwean government listen to and respect its people."
